Elizabeth Griscom Ross was the 8th of 17 children in her family. She chose to marry outside of her Quaker faith and became an upholsterer beside her first husband. She lost her first two husbands (Joseph Ashburn and John Ross) to the war. Her third husband was John Claypoole.

She was an accomplished seamstress and business owner. She sewed clothes for George Washington, who was a friend of hers.

Note: There is a lot of controversy over whether or not Mrs. Ross was really the one who designed and created a flag commissioned by George Washington. Some historians say Francis Hopkinson designed it and she sewed it. We do know that she did make flags for the new country and the Continental navy, and that the flag with 13 stars set in a circle and 13 stripes is named after her. Until we know for certain that it was someone else, I’m going to continue with this historical possibility.
