Directions for Using the Silent E Phonics Worksheet
Have your beginning reading student read each word in the boxes. Then, have them draw a picture of the word in the box. Let them compare how the addition of the silent letter E changes the meaning to a new word because they’ve switched from a short vowel sound to a long vowel sound.
I like to tell my beginning readers that the silent E make the first vowel say its name. This makes it easier for them to remember what the silent E does.
This Silent E words worksheet features these short -e words: Can, Cap, Man, and Pin. With the addition of the silent E, they become Long vowel words: Cane, Cape, Mane, and Pine.
