History of Father’s Day

Sonora Dodd is thought to be the one who came up with the idea of celebrating fatherhood with a Father’s Day after listening to a Mother’s Day sermon at her church. Her father had raised her and her five siblings after her mother died in childbirth and she wanted to do something to honor the sacrifices that he had made for his children.

The first Father’s Day was held on June 19, 1910 and later on, President Nixon signed a law in 1972 to make the third Sunday of June a national holiday.
