Aunt Clara Brown was a former slave who was dubbed the “Angel of the Rockies” because she helped so many people, using her profits from her business to buy freedom for slaves.
After being freed by her owner in 1859, she began to look for her daughter, Eliza Jane, from whom she’d been separated by a former owner.
She is credited as being the first black woman to cross the plains during the Gold Rush. She began a business in Colorado and used her profits to help other freed slaves start new lives there.
These notebooking pages are generally for students working at the 2nd to 8th grade levels.
