Insect Mini Unit Study using Joyful Noise: Poems for Two Voices by Paul Fleischman

Library List:
Joyful Noise: Poems for Two Voices by Paul Fleischman
Magic School Bus: Bugs, Bugs, Bugs - video
How to Draw Insects by Barbara Soloff Levy (any How to Draw Insects book would work)
What Is an Insect by Robert Snedden (explains the life cycle of insects)
The Life Cycle of a Butterfly by Bobbie Kalman (any butterfly life cycle book would work)
The Insect Book: A Basic Guide to the Collection and Care of Common Insects for Young Children by Connie Zakowski
National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Insects and Spiders by Lorus Milne & Lorus J. Milne
New Celtic Mandolin by Simon Mayor - sound recording

Suggested Activities:

Learn about the anatomy of insects. This is a great insect anatomy site!

Learn about the life cycle of insects from the book: What is an Insect.

Read the poems from Joyful Noise together. After reading each poem, use the field guide to find out about the insect in the poem. Fill in insect worksheet. Make an insect book using this insect book cover and the information sheets you make.

After reading the Fireflies poem, catch fireflies!

After reading the Honeybees poem, visit a local bee keeper to learn more about bees. Sample some of their honey.

After reading the Chrysalis Diary poem, read The Life Cycle of a Butterfly.

Listen to New Celtic Mandolin. There is a song called "Dance of the Water Boatmen", "The Butterfly", and "The Wasp Reel"

In the book of Exodus, read about the plagues in Egypt to learn how much damage insects can do.

Write a haiku about insects. A traditional haiku has three lines. The first line has five syllables, the second has seven syllables and the last has five syllables.

Scholastic has some Magic School Bus online insect activities.

Do a scavenger hunt to see how many insects you can find. Be sure to take along a magnifying glass and your field guide so you can examine them closely. If you want to bring any home, check out The Insect Book: A Basic Guide to the Collection and Care of Common Insects for Young Children. It explains how to care for the insects.
