Instructions for Folding Lapbooks

Activity 1: Vocabulary
Write one vocabulary word and its meaning on these vocabulary cards.
Nguzo Saba, umoja, kujichagulia, ujima, ujamaa, nia, kuumba, imani, karamu, mkeka, mazao, muhindi, kikombe cha umoja, kinara, mishumaa saba, bendera, harambee

Activity 2: Beginning of Kwanzaa
Use this flap book to learn about the beginning of Kwanzaa.

Activity 3: Seven Days
Use this flap book to learn about the seven days of Kwanzaa. On the outside of each flap, write what each day is called. On the inside, explain what it means and the significance.

Activity 4: Recipes
Use this envelope to store the recipes you will cook during Kwanzaa.

Activity 5: Straw Mat - mkeka
Inside this matchbook, write about the mkeka.
Make a mkeka.

Activity 6: Fruits and Vegetables - mazao
In this booklet, explain what the fruits and vegetables represent.

Activity 7: Corn: muhindi
In this shapebook, explain what the corn represents.

Activity 8: The Unity Cup - kikombe cha umoja
In this fan fold book, explain the significance of the unity cup.

Activity 9: The Candleholder - kinara
On the outside of this booklet, color the candles the proper colors. Inside, explain why the candles are those colors and which candle goes with which day.
Make a kinara.

Activity 10: The Celebration
Inside this fan fold, write about how Kwanzaa is celebrated.
