Building a Wattle Fence
Posted Under: Gardening
Our dog thinks she has to run through the flowers that are next to the door every time she comes in the house. I planted some new flowers there this spring and I would like to keep her out of them. I had an old wire white fence that I put up, but it is in the front of the house and didn’t look very nice. So, I got out my Back to Basics book to look for homemade wooden fences. The most practical type of fence for this situation looked like the wattle fencing. It is basically a woven fence.
I took some sticks and cut them to a little more than the height of fence I wanted. Then, I stuck them in the ground about 6 inches apart.
Then, I cut some skinny branches and cut all of the leaves off them. I used a fast growing tree that was coming up underneath our pine trees. They needed to be cut out anyway. After I had the leaves off, I wove the branches back and forth around the “fence posts”.
I think it would be better if I could figure out some way to secure the ends. Any ideas?

Maybe if you doubled the large sticks on both ends, it would make it look more “finished” at the ends. Maybe you could use some twine or brown string to tie the those double sticks together? Just a thought.
If you run the fencing pieces past the end post and then twist them like a string as you make the turn to go back around they will make your fence stronger. Twist them right up tight and then slack a bit as you make the bend.
