Reducing Kids’ Clutter

A couple times each year, I have the kids clean out their rooms and pick out the things they don’t play with anymore.  When we lived in town, we could easily put all of these out grown toys into a garage sale.  Now that we live in the country, I don’t feel a garage sale [...]

I Reduced my Electric Bill

Last fall, I stopped using my dryer almost completely.  Before this, I had hung out clothes when it was nice outside.  But, I wasn’t very faithful with my clothespins.  Now, about the only time I use my dryer is when I wash the sheets and it is raining and I can’t hang them outside.
I have [...]

Decorating with Fresh Flowers from Your Yard

It is definitely spring at our house.  The forsythia and daffodils are blooming.  But, it is supposed to be cold for the next few days.  I knew I wouldn’t be able to go out and enjoy the flowers as much as we have been.  So, this morning, I went out and cut some forsythia branches [...]

4H Gardening Meeting – Planting Seeds

We had our second 4H gardening meeting this week.  I was cutting up seed potatoes when the kids arrived, so I was able to show them how to prepare potatoes for planting.  We cut them into pieces, leaving at least one eye on each piece, then set them out in the sun all afternoon to [...]

Fresh Homemade Strawberry Shortcake

We went to Costco last weekend and got some staple items.  I am always amazed at how much we end up spending there even though everything we purchase is cheaper per unit than we could get it elsewhere.  I suppose it is because the quantities are so large that it is always such a large [...]

Replacing Paper Towels with Crocheted Dishcloths

We have been working on eliminating the need for certain paper products from our home.  We have stopped buying paper napkins and now use cloth napkins.  We are also trying to stop using paper towels.   I used to use paper towels for cleaning, washing dishes and wiping up spills.
It was easy to quit using paper [...]

Recipe: Chocolate Sheet Cake

Here’s a yummy, homemade cake to make when you have a little bit of sour milk that needs to be used.
Chocolate Sheet Cake
In a saucepan, melt 1 cup butter.  Add 4 Tablespoons cocoa powder and 1 cup water.  Bring to a boil.  Mix in 2 cups flour, 2 cups sugar, 1 1/3 teaspoon baking soda.  [...]

Garden Fever – Seedlings & Early Spring Planting

I started broccoli plants from seed a couple of weeks ago.  This past weekend I transferred them to individual pots (recycled pots from nurseries) to grow until it is time to plant them outside.   They need the light to be very close to the tops of them or they will become spindly.  I just keep [...]

Content Ratings for Literature (guest post)

I used to try to read all of the books my kids got at the library, but as they have become avid readers, it has become increasingly difficult to keep up with them.  When Jennifer told me about her service, I just had to share it with you also!
