T-shirt Rug Tutorial
I’ve been needing to replace a rug I have in the laundry area of our basement for quite a while. So, being the tightwad that I am, I thought I’d see if I could make one. I decided to crocheted the rug out of t-shirt material. I hope this will prove to be durable and easily washable. I found some old, slightly stained but not threadbare t-shirts in the colors I wanted. I used 4 t-shirts. The amount needed will vary depending on the size of t-shirts used and the size you want the rug. Here’s how I made my rug.
Cut the t-shirts into 1/2 inch strips.
Each strip is a continuous circle. Cut the circle at one end so you have one long piece of material.
Fold over the end about 3/4 inch. Cut a slit into the fold. Repeat on other end of fabric strip.
Once you have done this to all of the fabric strips, insert one end of a strip (Strip A) into the slit in another strip (Strip B).
Now, take the other end of Strip A and slip it into the slit in the opposite end of Strip A.
Pull Strip A all the way through and and tighten slightly.

You now have a really long piece of t-shirt yarn without any unsightly knots. Start rolling one end into a ball and repeat the steps above to add more yarn.
Crochet your rug to the desired size (I used a big crochet hook and the single crochet stitch)
Tie fringe onto the ends.
And you’re finished.

What a great idea! When I saw the title to your post, I was imagining a circular rug and thinking I wasn’t talented enough to tackle such a project; but seeing that it’s a rectangle makes me think that it’s do-able. Thanks for the inspiration. I need a rug in front of my dryer since the clothes all tend to fall out onto the floor.
AWESOME! I have been working on homemade rugs for years, but never have I seen one like this. I LOVE it!
