Co-op Egypt

We belong to a local co-op that meets monthly.  Every month we learn about a different country.  The kids have Social Studies, Science, Art, P.E. and Foods classes.  They study things relating to the country in each class.  We met recently for January and learned about Egypt.  I co-lead the Foods class for the kids.  We talk a little bit about their food customs, but basically, we just eat foods from the country.  My co-leader, Misty, and I have lots of fun getting together to plan the menus.  It is fun getting to try the different recipes.  Even if we decided to make a cultural meal at home, there is no way we would try this many recipes, so it is a good way for the kids to try different things.  Some months, I don’t like any of the recipes enough to save, but this month I saved two of the ones I cooked and I definitely need one of the ones Misty made.  My favorite Egyptian recipes were:
Egyptian Palace Bread
Raspberry Mint Cairo Cooler
Chocolate Butter Gooey Cake

This sounds like a really fun way to co-op. Our homeschool group has a one-night event that we call International Festival. Each family (sometimes each child within a family) chooses a country to learn about and create a display about and then on the Festival night we set up tables for the children to display their work. We each create a dish to pass from our countries as well and have a big pot-luck from around the world! The kids also get “passports” (blank map books) and as they go around and view all the displays they have to mark their “passports” to show where they’ve “been” – so it’s a good geography time as well. Just thought I’d share another way to co-op with new countries.

I’m so excited you are blogging! I was actually thinking of making a Co-op recipe blog. I was going to talk to you about it. I guess you saw the Russian Soup on my blog? And I love your title at the top “I should have been a Retro Housewife”! Me, too!! Keep up the great work!
