Studying Current Events

Studying Current Events

As my kids have gotten older, we have incorporated currents events into their weekly schedules. A few times each week, they browse the news and write a short summary of an article that interests them. We have utilized a variety of news sources including children’s news sites, news magazines, and newspapers. I believe this has resulted in several benefits to them.

  • Learning Tomorrow’s History Today
When I was in school, we studied history, but only up to where the book ended. Anything that happened after the book was published we didn’t cover. Because of that, I graduated with a lack of knowledge of historical events that happened during the first 18 years or so of my life. Children soak up information and remember it better than we do as adults, so if we encourage them to study today’s current events, they should end up with at least a general idea of world events that occurred during the first two decades of their lives.
  • Ability to Participate in an Adult Conversation
I remember being in that awkward stage where I didn’t want to play with the other kids at family gatherings, but the adult conversation was really rather boring. However, possibly because they have studied current current events, my kids do actually participate in conversations with adults. We all want to share our world view with our kids, but that is hard to do if they don’t have any concept or interest in the world around them.
  • Increase their vocabulary and critical thinking skills
Sometimes when the kids read the news, they are faced with a concept, word, or geographical location with which they are not familiar. Kids are naturally curious and have a love of learning, so when something sparks their interest, they will look things up to learn more. They will also think things through and develop their own opinion about what is going on in the world.

I am sure there are many more benefits to studying current events not listed here. Why not give it a try for a few weeks and see what results!
