Literature Unit Study Based on Lon Po Po: A Red Riding Hood Story

Yeh-Shen: A Cinderella Story from China 
retold by Ai-Ling Louie and illustrated by Ed Young

Unit: This unit is for children ages 7-11. It would work nicely as a supplement to studying China or Fairy Tales or as a slightly scary story for Halloween.

Dictation – Older
Day 1: “Remember to close the door at sunset and latch it well.”
Day 2: But an old wolf lived nearby and saw the good mother leave.
Day 3: The wolf acted surprised.
Day 4: At the moment he entered the door, the wolf blew out the candle.
Day 5: The wolf was delighted.

Dictation – Younger
Day 1: The good mother went to visit the grandmother.
Day 2: The children were home alone.
Day 3: The wolf tricked the children.
Day 4: The children tricked the wolf.
Day 5: The mother brought food home for the children.

Grammar – Older and Younger- Sentence Making with Commas

Shang, Tao, and Paotze lived in Northern China.

How many nouns are in the subject of the sentence? (3)

When 2 or more nouns are used in the subject of a sentence they are said to be of the same kind and are called a series.

Rule: When 2 or more words of the same kind are used together they are separated by commas and often joined by words like and, or, or but.

Olders: Fill in the blanks and use these sentences in your paragraphs on Day 3 and Day 4.

Youngers: Fill in the blanks and use this sentence in your writing on Day 1 and Day 4.

Day 3: The story of Lon Po Po is over one thousand years old.
Day 4: The setting of the book Lon Po Po is in Northern China.
Day 5: Ed Young wrote and illustrated the book Lon Po Po.

Ed Young combines detailed pastel drawings with watercolor pictures that suggest objects.
Notice the picture of the mother waving goodbye to her children. The children and the mother are drawn in more detail than the trees, sky, and landscape.

Also look at the picture of the children up in the gingko tree. The children are drawn in more detail than the gingko tree and leaves.

Look too at the picture of the wolf pacing under the gingko tree, he is drawn in more detail than the tree and the grass.”>Drawing Activity
Using watercolors paint a picture of your backyard. Include the shapes of the landscape but not the details. You just want to paint the suggestion of the details.
Using pastels draw a detailed drawing of one object in your backyard. You draw this over the watercolor background you made above. Here you want to add the details of the object.

Locate China on the map.
Create a story disk for Lon Po Po and place it on China on the map.
Draw a picture of China and label the following:
The capital of China ( Beijing)
The Himalayas Mountains
The Yangtze River
Hong Kong
The Pacific Ocean
Color a flag of China and paste it on your drawing of China.
Write the following on the bottom of your Map.
China is on the continent of Asia. Asia is the largest continent.

Extension Activity
Read the European version of Little Red Riding Hood, Charles Perrault wrote a good one which can be found in The Golden Book of Fairy Tales by Adrienne Sequr. How are the two Red Riding Hood stories alike? How are they different.?
