Choo Choo: The Story of a Little Engine Who Ran Away by Virginia Lee Burton

Energy & Motion – Choo Choo thinks he will go faster without all of the cars. Make a ramp for a toy truck. See how far the truck will go after being let go from the top of the ramp. You can also time the truck. Add blocks to the truck and measure the same things. Ask the kids to predict what will happen before you do the second part.

Drawbridges – Choo Choo jumps over a drawbridge. Investigate the different types of drawbridges. Watch this video about How DrawBridges work. Have kids build a drawbridge using K’nex or legos.

Art – Drawbridges – Look at Vincent van Gogh’s “Bridge at Arles”. Discuss van Gogh’s painting style. Paint a picture of Choo Choo jumping over a drawbridge in the style of Vincent van Gogh.

Steam – Choo Choo is a steam engine. Learn more about steam engines at ExplainThatStuff. You could boil some water in a teapot and listen for it to whistle.
