We did this unit a couple of weeks before Christmas, to get all the baking done and prepare some gift jars while keeping the children busy, at the rate of a book a day.

If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Joffe Nemeroff
– Set up dominoes to demonstrate a chain reaction
– Have children write/narrate and illustrate “If you give ____ a ____” story
– Bake chocolate chip cookies and peanut butter cookies
– Use chocolate chips as manipulatives for math problems
– Make cookie mix jars for gifts, having children help to measure all the ingredients.

Arthur’s Christmas Cookies by Lillian Hoban and The Christmas Cookies by Andy Rector

– Have child partner read story
– Bake and decorate sugar cookies
– Do cookie baking sequencing cards
– Make cookie mix jars for gifts, having children help to measure all the ingredients

The Gingerbread Man
– Discuss where various spices and molasses come from when making cookies
– Make felt gingerbread ornaments
– Complete Gingerbread unit with printables
– Bake and decorate gingerbread cookies
– Using gingerbread patterns, have children make gift tags

Cranberry Christmas by Wende and Harry Devlin
– Discuss how cranberries grow in a bog
– Bake Cranberry Cookies (recipe on back of book)
– Bake oatmeal raisin cookies and make jar mixes
